Exploring the NASA Artemis Missions Through Research and Creativity
Fifth grade students recently participated in a multidisciplinary AAPS extension activity focused on NASA’s Artemis missions. The project integrated scientific research with creative expression, allowing students to analyze complex aerospace concepts and synthesize their learning through various media.
To build a foundational understanding of the mission's objectives, students analyzed a curated selection of resources, including NASA videos on the Artemis missions, infographics on lunar and terrestrial geology, and articles on lunar land features and NASA's plans for lunar settlement.
Using these materials, students synthesized their findings into a brief report detailing the engineering, science, and human factors involved in returning to the Moon.
After completing their reports, students translated their factual knowledge into creative projects, choosing one of four distinct pathways to model future lunar exploration. The first pathway consisted in designing a lunar base with the characteristics and constraints of the mission through Minecraft Education. On the other hand, the second (traditional art), third (digital art), and fourth (Adobe Express) options consisted in creating a poster or an advertisement to encourage people to live on the future lunar base.
This activity helped bridge STEAM research with creative execution. By transitioning from structured report writing to open-ended design, students demonstrated both factual comprehension and creative thinking regarding the future of space exploration.
