Third graders learn about community helpers through K-9 unit visit
Third grade students at Naples Elementary School recently had an exciting opportunity to learn firsthand about the important role community helpers play in keeping communities safe. As part of the Social Studies curriculum, students welcomed members of the Naples Security Police K-9 Unit for a special demonstration and presentation.
This learning experience connected directly to Social Studies Standard SS3.7, which focuses on how governments have the authority to make and enforce laws and how citizens contribute to their communities and countries. During the visit, students learned about the responsibilities of Military Police officers and the highly trained K-9 partners who work alongside them. The officers explained how teamwork, training, and dedication help them serve and protect others on military installations.
Students were especially engaged as they watched the K-9 demonstration and discovered how the dogs assist officers in carrying out their duties. The visit provided a real-world example of the services and organizations that help create safe, healthy, and thriving communities.
The experience also connected to Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann, a story recently read in all the classes. Students discussed the importance of teamwork, cooperation, and working together to achieve a common goal. They were able to draw meaningful connections between the partnership of Officer Buckle and Gloria and the collaboration they observed between the Military Police officers and their K-9 companions.
Through this memorable experience, students gained a deeper understanding of community helpers, responsible citizenship, and the role governments and public service professionals play in maintaining safe communities. It was an engaging and meaningful learning opportunity that brought classroom lessons to life and inspired students to appreciate the many people who work every day to serve and protect others.
