Naples Elementary School First and Fourth Graders Celebrate Reading with "Book Cook" Event

In a heartwarming celebration of literacy and community, two first grade classrooms, led by Dr. Houser and Miss Woodson, joined forces with Ms. Warden's fourth grade class for a special "Book Cook" event during Read Across America Week. This event marked the culmination of a year-long Book Buddies program, where fourth graders read to first graders, fostering a love for reading and building strong bonds between the students.
Parents were invited to contribute food items and volunteer during the event, helping run the various stations where students created dishes inspired by the books the students would read together. The event featured 12 creative stations, each themed around a different book. Among the highlights was a station where students created a butterfly using celery, cream cheese, pretzels, and raisins based on The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. There were stations based on books about fishing, teeth, popcorn, and cookies, offering a delightful variety of culinary experiences for the young readers.
From books to bites! Students and parents joined forces to create tasty treats inspired by beloved children’s books, celebrating literacy and community during Read Across America Week.
The students' reactions to the event were overwhelmingly positive. The first graders were thrilled to see their favorite books come to life through food, and the fourth graders felt proud of their role as mentors. The themed stations sparked creativity and fostered a sense of community.
Throughout the year, the students have thoroughly enjoyed their reading sessions, and the "Book Cook" event was a fitting celebration of their hard work and enthusiasm. The collaborative effort of parents, teachers, and students made this event a memorable and enriching experience for all involved.
