Administration

Dear Parents,

This week, we celebrated an incredible milestone as we held our first round of awards ceremonies for our 4th through 6th graders. It was truly inspiring to see our students recognized for their hard work, perseverance, and dedication throughout the year's first two quarters. We are incredibly proud of everything our students have accomplished, from academic achievements to personal growth.

While the ceremonies highlighted many achievements, it's important to remember that every student has made strides in their learning journey, and we celebrate all of their progress and growth.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to help every student reach their full potential.

Here's to continued success in the second half of the school year!

Grade-Level Highlights: A Peak into Our Week

Universal Pre-Kindergarten

PreK students will be starting our new unit on Bread! We will share what kinds of Bread we eat at home and school. We will focus on new vocabulary such as bakery, bake, baker, and knead. We will also investigate different kinds of Bread and use descriptive words such as crust, crunchy, soft, and sweet.

Kindergarten

We will start unit 5 in language arts, focusing on technology and then and now. We will investigate what technology could be like in the future and how it looked in the past. We continue to work on being brave spellers and applying our letter sound knowledge to reading and writing activities.

In math, we will explore ways to make and decompose numbers up to 10 as we continue to explore addition and subtraction.

In science, we will finish investigations with wood and, in health, explore healthy foods.

Please continue to read with your child daily. We also encourage you to play board games that encourage turn-taking, using game pieces/dice, and following the rules of the game.

The 100th day of kindergarten is coming up on February 7. Students can dress up to represent the number 100 on that date.

First Grade

Next week in ELA, we will work on Unit 4, Week 3. We will work on three letter blends: SCR, spl, spr, squ, and str. Our shared reading story is The Fox and the Little Red Hen, and we will focus on retelling key details, using context clues, and comparing and contrasting characters. Our writing for the week will highlight the process of writing a narrative. We will brainstorm, draft, revise, and write a final narrative.

In math, we will continue Unit 7: Meanings of Addition.

In science, we will continue working through our Sound and Light unit.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with your child's teacher. Have a wonderful weekend! ☺️

Second Grade

In ELA, we will read three fictional texts: “Why Owls are Wise,” “Wind and Sun,” and “The Stone Garden.” We will apply reading comprehension skills, such as identifying key events and points of view, using context clues, and comparing and contrasting different texts. For grammar, we will focus on adjectives and contractions.

For math, we are continuing our unit on measurement.

Thank you for your continued support!

Third Grade

This week in 3rd Grade, we have been finishing our Unit 7 Fractions unit in math and practicing identifying fractions on a number line that extends beyond the number 1. Next week, we will move on to our next fraction unit to learn more about equivalent fractions.

In ELA, we have continued to learn about character perspectives and how to compare different points of view. Next week, we will continue to develop these skills and apply them to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk!

In science, we continue to learn about crayfish structural and behavioral adaptations; in social studies, we continue with mapping skills and geography.

A gentle reminder from the 3rd Grade Team:

  • Please ensure students bring their Chromebooks fully charged every day.
  • Please work with your 3rd Grader on their multiplication fact recall every day (we are noticing a plateau in progress through the multiplications)
  • Please pack a daily healthy snack (something that is easy to eat quickly with minimal mess). Thank you!

Fourth Grade

This week, we read a nonfiction text called “Green Transportation Solutions.” We will apply various comprehension skills such as identifying the key details and main idea, analyzing the author’s purpose, examining reasons and evidence, and integrating information.

In math, we will begin Unit 8: Equivalent Fractions.

Students will begin writing an opinion essay using details from passages to support their ideas.

Friendly reminder: The 4th grade will visit the library this week!

Fifth Grade

This week, we will have a spelling test over Unit 5, Week 2.

Also, your child should be coming home in the next week or two with a permission slip from the PE teacher requesting your permission to use the newly installed Rock Wall. Please complete the form and return it to your child's teacher as soon as possible.

Please see the 5th grade website's "NES News" tab for more information about what's happening in 5th grade.

In ELA, students study the novel Color of My Words. Our other current units include Measurement and Units, Weather, and World Religions.

Healthy Tips for Parents & Students

Tip #1: Eat at Healthy Breakfast

Unfortunately, I talk to many students who don’t eat breakfast before school. It doesn’t have to be extravagant- try (whole wheat) toast with peanut butter and banana, yogurt with fruit and granola, and any combination of protein and complex carbohydrates will fuel your student’s body for a successful day of learning!

Tip #2: Bring a Water Bottle to School

Did you know children should drink 5 – 8 cups of water daily to stay hydrated?

Tip #3: Limit Screen Time

Fortunately, we live in a mild climate conducive to children playing outside and being kids! Better yet, parents, join them! Take a family walk after dinner, teach them to ride a bike, develop healthy lifestyle choices, and make screen time the exception rather than the rule for healthy kids!
