Administration

Dear Parents,

Here are a few important updates from our school:

Counselor Classroom Lessons

Our counselors have been doing a fantastic job in providing engaging and educational classroom lessons. Thus far, they have conducted two monthly sessions with students at each grade level. The students have shown great enthusiasm, and we are pleased to see them actively participating in these valuable sessions.

Recess Update

Due to safety concerns, we have decided to temporarily suspend soccer during recess. We kindly remind all students that we do not permit any student-to-student while on school grounds, including during games such as tag. This regulation is for the safety and well-being of everyone.

Outdoor Games Donation

We offer a huge thank you to our amazing PTA for donating outdoor games like Connect 4 and cornhole to enhance recess time. However, we have noticed that some game pieces have been thrown down drains or damaged. Please take a moment to talk to your child about the importance of taking care of school property so that all students can enjoy these games during recess.

Maintaining a Safe and Respectful Environment

We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students. When disciplinary matters arise, please know that we take them seriously and address each situation by our policies and procedures.

While we understand your concerns, student privacy laws prevent us from sharing specific details regarding other students or any disciplinary actions. Please rest assured that we are handling incidents appropriately and taking the necessary steps to ensure a positive and secure environment for all.

We appreciate your understanding and support in reinforcing our commitment to a safe and respectful school community.

Thank you for your continued support and helping us maintain a respectful, safe, and positive school community.

Grade-Level Highlights: A Peak into Our Week

Universal Pre-Kindergarten

PreK students will compare different kinds of breads and their recipes. We will look at breads and decide how to categorize them. One category will be "pastries," which we will discuss as a fancy word for sweet, baked foods like cakes and cookies. We will also explore how flour can be made from things other than wheat and experiment to see if we can make some of our own!

Kindergarten

In language arts and social studies, the Kinders will continue to learn about then and now. We will write our opinions on whether we would prefer a tech or no tech day of play.

In math, we will discover that every tricky teen has a group of ten 1s and some more 1s. This concept will help students explore place value, which they will build on in first grade.

We LOVE our kinders! Thank you for sharing your children with us!

First Grade

Next week in ELA, we will work on Unit 2, Week 5. We will continue working on retelling key details, our grammar will focus on the use of prepositions, and our reading will focus on comparing and contrasting texts as well as sequencing stories.

In Math, we will continue our work in Unit 8: Meanings of Subtraction.

In Health, we will work on Unit 4: All About Medicines.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's specific teacher. Have a wonderful weekend! ☺️

Second Grade

Next week, we will be reading fictional texts and non-fiction stories.  We will apply various reading comprehension skills such as determining the main idea, identifying key details, analyzing images from text, drawing inferences/conclusions, and comparing and contrasting different texts. We will focus on vowel teams in spelling, such as/oi/: oi and oy. In Math, we will wrap up our measurement unit and start with the following unit of money and time.

Thank you for your continued support!

Third Grade

This week in 3rd Grade, we have been learning how to compare fractions with the same denominator or numerator. Students had to draw models and explain their thinking to justify which fraction was more significant than the other.

In ELA, we compared and contrasted the perspectives and plot of The True Jack? to Jack and the Beanstalk and The Giant’s Complaint. Students loved learning about different character perspectives, which will feed into their opinion writing about who they think the true villain is—Jack or the Giant!

In Science, we are moving on to learn about magnetism.

In social studies, we learn about our local geographical area compared to the USA.

A gentle reminder:

We continue to notice many students forgetting to bring their Chromebooks to school. This impacts their ability to engage and access materials in class. Please help your child ensure they get their Chromebook fully charged to school every day.

Thank you for your continued support!

Fourth Grade

This week, we will read two fictional stories: "Rabbit and Coyote" and "The Valiant Little Tailor." We will apply various comprehension skills, such as identifying the key events and summarizing, drawing inferences, using context clues, examining theme and genre, and comparing and contrasting.

We will begin a research project in writing. Students will learn to use keywords to search for relevant sources and paraphrase and use direct quotes to avoid plagiarism.

In math, we will begin Unit 9: Adding and Subtracting Fractions.

Fifth Grade

For ELA, we will have a spelling test on Unit 6, Week 1 words.

In Math, we are starting Unit 9, which focuses on adding and subtracting fractions.

For Health, we are starting a new lesson about the lungs and their functions.

We will have friendship card exchanges on Thursday afternoon and look forward to seeing the boxes your child created.

Please see the 5th grade website's "NES News" tab for more information about what's happening in 5th grade.

Sixth Grade

6th grade is hopping into our algebra unit in math.  Students are working on a science weather unit project and exploring Ancient Greece in social studies.

We are enjoying an exciting story in ELA: "The Ravine."

Nurse Newsletter

Let's talk about hydration!

For physiological reasons, maintaining adequate fluid intake and optimal hydration is essential for kids, as is adopting healthy, sustainable drinking habits.

Did you know…

  • Water is the most abundant component of the human body, making up approximately 60% of its mass.
  • Water intake supports many bodily functions that are essential in daily life, such as thermoregulation (maintaining a steady internal body temperature), waste elimination (helping mitigate constipation), and numerous metabolic reactions (helping transport carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids).

What can parents do?

  • Be a good role model! Children copy and acquire dietary behaviors from you! Are you a positive influence on healthy choices?
  • Be sure to send a water bottle to school with your child. Teach your student the importance of water intake and hydration for cognitive and physical performance!
  • Associate water intake with "moments," such as waking up, eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or taking morning/afternoon water breaks. Establish a routine throughout the day without relying on one's thirst.
  • Make it taste good with fruits or herbs! Avoid flavor enhancers- they tend to contain sugar alcohols (bad), artificial sweeteners (harmful), or caffeine (not recommended for kids).

Introducing water to your student early and encouraging healthy drink choices/habits are essential to support adequate fluid intake and optimal hydration now and as an adult!
