Grade-Level Highlights: A Peak into Our Week

PreK students will be starting a brand-new unit on Pets! We will explore pet-related items such as toys, books, photos, and water bowls/bottles. We will also explore new vocabulary, such as "domesticated" and "characteristics," to describe pets. We will also learn about pet safety and that some pets don't want to be approached by new people, so we should always ask permission before touching a new pet.

In language arts, kindergarten will finish unit 6, which focuses on stories with a message. We will listen to and complete activities about the story The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Our letter focus will be Dd. Please continue to review sight words with your child.

In math, we will start unit 11. We will review the names and attributes of flat 2D shapes and start learning about solid 3D shapes. On Friday, ask your child to tell you the attributes of a cube and sphere.

In science, we will continue our unit on materials and motion. This week, we will explore fabric.

This week in 3rd Grade, we have been consolidating our skills in using multiplication facts to solve the unknown in division problems (Unit 9). A little "head's up": our end-of-year summative assessments will occur the week of April 21st. 3rd graders need to learn as many of their multiplication facts by then as possible. As we have seen in our current math unit, students who can recall their multiplication facts rapidly in any order can engage with the math units more proficiently than those who don't know their multiplication facts. Please practice multiplication facts with your child daily at home because it can make a difference!

To celebrate Read Across America Week, 3rd Grade hosted a Reader's Café called "Starbooks." This event was a great hit! Students felt excited and proud to host their customers, and they did a fantastic job of reading out loud with fluency and expression. All had fun! Thank you to parents and teachers for supporting us!

In ELA, we have continued to learn more about technological advances, focusing on compound and complex sentences in writing.

In science, we continue to learn about magnetism; in social studies, we will move on to our next unit, economics!

    Friendly reminders:

    • Charge Chromebook daily!
    • Daily multiplication facts practice!

This week, our students are diving into a nonfiction text, Building the Transcontinental Railroad. As we read, we’ll focus on essential comprehension skills, including identifying key details and main ideas, understanding text structure and features, and integrating information from the text.

In writing, students will take on the role of reporters! They will be writing a newspaper article about how advancements in transportation have shaped American society.

In math, we continue Unit 10: Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers. Students will practice breaking apart mixed numbers, converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and solving addition and subtraction problems with mixed fractions. Our Unit 10 assessment is on Friday, March 14.

There are also some exciting activities happening this week!

📚 All 4th-grade classes will visit the library.

🧼 Nurse Mathews will visit Mrs. Peck’s and Ms. Warden’s classes to demonstrate proper handwashing.

💬 Mrs. Griego’s and Mr. Urquidi’s classes will have a counseling session with Ms. Garza.

As always, thank you for your support! We’re looking forward to another great week of learning.

For ELA, we are finishing up Unit 6, and our assessment will be given on Wednesday. We will also have our Interim assessment on Thursday. This test will assess everything students have learned up to this point in English Language Arts. We are also completing our final draft of the narrative journal entry. There is no spelling test this week.

In Math, we are beginning Unit 10 with a focus on the multiplication of fractions. The grade for math this week will be Unit 10, Lesson 2, practice pages.

For Health, we are starting a new unit focused on nutrition and making good food choices.

For Science, we are delving into the earth and sun unit, focusing on shadows and understanding the earth's rotations using compasses. In Social Studies, we will continue learning about Canada and the U.S.A.

Please see the 5th grade website's "NES News" tab for more information about what's happening in 5th grade.

The 6th graders continue to study fossils, Ancient Rome, pre-algebra, and argumentative writing.

Let’s talk about the importance of physical activity in children!

Physical activity is widely known to provide multiple health-related benefits in children, such as improved mood, lower adipose (fat) levels, improved sleep, improved school performance, and normal blood pressure.

    Did You Know

    • 81% of children ages 11-17 are insufficiently physically active, globally!!
    • Physical inactivity (sedentary behavior) includes smartphone/tablet use, TV viewing, video game playing, computer use, riding in a car, and reading/studying while sitting.
    • Evidence shows that sedentary behavior is related to poorer health outcomes in children and adolescents, such as shorter sleep duration, poorer mental health, unfavorable behavior conduct, and poorer cardiac health.
    • Kids should get an average of 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

    What can parents do?

    • Be a good role model!
    • Walk or ride a bike to school, the store, to a friend’s house instead of driving!
    • Take an after-dinner family walk or bike ride!
    • Limit screen time to no more than 2 hours per day!!
    • Encourage your kids to go outside and play!!
