PreK students will be starting a brand-new unit on Pets! We will explore pet-related items such as toys, books, photos, and water bowls/bottles. We will also explore new vocabulary, such as "domesticated" and "characteristics," to describe pets. We will also learn about pet safety and that some pets don't want to be approached by new people, so we should always ask permission before touching a new pet.
In language arts, kindergarten will finish unit 6, which focuses on stories with a message. We will listen to and complete activities about the story The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Our letter focus will be Dd. Please continue to review sight words with your child.
In math, we will start unit 11. We will review the names and attributes of flat 2D shapes and start learning about solid 3D shapes. On Friday, ask your child to tell you the attributes of a cube and sphere.
In science, we will continue our unit on materials and motion. This week, we will explore fabric.
This week in 3rd Grade, we have been consolidating our skills in using multiplication facts to solve the unknown in division problems (Unit 9). A little "head's up": our end-of-year summative assessments will occur the week of April 21st. 3rd graders need to learn as many of their multiplication facts by then as possible. As we have seen in our current math unit, students who can recall their multiplication facts rapidly in any order can engage with the math units more proficiently than those who don't know their multiplication facts. Please practice multiplication facts with your child daily at home because it can make a difference!
To celebrate Read Across America Week, 3rd Grade hosted a Reader's Café called "Starbooks." This event was a great hit! Students felt excited and proud to host their customers, and they did a fantastic job of reading out loud with fluency and expression. All had fun! Thank you to parents and teachers for supporting us!
In ELA, we have continued to learn more about technological advances, focusing on compound and complex sentences in writing.
In science, we continue to learn about magnetism; in social studies, we will move on to our next unit, economics!
Friendly reminders:
- Charge Chromebook daily!
- Daily multiplication facts practice!
This week, our students are diving into a nonfiction text, Building the Transcontinental Railroad. As we read, we’ll focus on essential comprehension skills, including identifying key details and main ideas, understanding text structure and features, and integrating information from the text.
In writing, students will take on the role of reporters! They will be writing a newspaper article about how advancements in transportation have shaped American society.
In math, we continue Unit 10: Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers. Students will practice breaking apart mixed numbers, converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and solving addition and subtraction problems with mixed fractions. Our Unit 10 assessment is on Friday, March 14.
