Administration

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope this letter finds you well and that you are enjoying the beautiful spring weather. We have several exciting updates and events to share with you this month.

Month of the Military Child Celebrations:

Our celebrations continue with a PTA Family Movie Event on April 13. Sign up to join us for a fun-filled afternoon. Additionally, students can participate in an Obstacle Course during their PE classes, and the PTA will generously provide Gelato for all students during recess. We encourage everyone to wear purple every Wednesday in April to support our military-connected students. You are also welcome to join your student for lunch any day throughout April.

Employee Appreciation:

April is a month to show gratitude for our dedicated employees. Over the break, we celebrated Paraprofessional Appreciation Day on April 2 and National School Librarian Day on April 4. Thank you to Ms. Navo for her invaluable contributions to the school library. This week, we also recognized National Assistant Principals Week and extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Rascoe for her hard work and dedication.

DoDEA CAS Summative Assessment Testing:

Students will participate in the DoDEA CAS Summative Assessment testing this week, which will continue throughout April, starting with 4th grade. To ensure they perform their best, please ensure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a healthy breakfast daily.

Hiring Freeze Update:

Due to the recent hiring freeze, we have had to repost previous job announcements. Some individuals may need to reapply for their positions. We understand this may cause some inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience during this process.

Grade-Level Highlights: A Peak into Our Week

PreK students will share their experiences with planting seeds or caring for plants. We will introduce the word "garden" and explain that it is an area where plants such as flowers, fruits, and vegetables are planted together. We will also introduce the term gardener and explain that someone takes care of a garden, and we will begin to plan our garden!

Kindergarten is finishing a unit on holidays and celebrations in language arts and social studies. We will listen to an opinion story and use text evidence to explain our opinions. The letter of the week is Jj, and the sight words are what, want, and where. Please continue to help your child read and write sight words that we have already learned this year. We are starting to write informative stories while still focusing on writing the sounds we hear, using finger spaces, and using capital and lowercase letters appropriately.

In math, we will start a new unit on non-standard measurement. This week, we will learn about length and height. We will align objects to compare and decide which object is longer/taller or shorter and explain how we know.

In science, we are learning about weather.

Don’t forget to wear purple on Wednesday to support Military Kids!

Tuesday, April 15th, is our MOMC performance in the cafeteria at 0830.

Please have your student wear purple, and please be sure to have your student to school on time.

Additionally, we have sent home field trip information and permission slips. Permission slips are due by Friday, April 18th.

In ELA, we will move into Unit 7, Week 2. The phonics focus is long e vowel teams and single letters (e, ea, ee, ie). Our reading focus will highlight retelling key details, sequencing events, finding text evidence, and comparing and contrasting. In math, we will begin Unit 11, covering subtraction within 100. In health, we will start Unit 9: How I Breathe

If you have specific questions, please get in touch with your child’s teacher. Have a wonderful weekend! 😊

This week, we will be reading one fictional text called "In the British Museum" and two non-fictional stories called "A Gift to America" and "Primary Sources."  We will apply various reading comprehension skills, such as determining the main idea, identifying key details, examining images in a text, and making connections between texts. In writing, we will plan and edit an informative report.  Students will analyze the prompt, find evidence from print sources and the media, then organize and plan their writing.

The 3rd Grade Team welcomed our students back with many fun MOMC spirit days this week! We want to recognize how special, strong, and resilient our military kids are! This week in 3rd Grade, we have been learning how to find the perimeter of unknown sides and apply previously taught skills of finding the area of rectangles and compound shapes. The end of the unit requires students to solve both area and perimeter, applying these concepts to real-world word problems. We have been working on Unit 6 Week 2 in ELA, reading a humorous story called ‘Dr Knowall’! In writing, students have been practicing writing narrative journal entries from the perspective of their chosen character from the story. Spelling focused on long-oo and short-oo sounds, and grammar focused on comparative and superlative adverbs. In Science, students continued to investigate forces and motion patterns; in Social Studies, we continued to work on our economics unit.

Even though it is the final quarter, we encourage students to keep up their daily practice of:

    • Recalling multiplication facts
    • Reading out loud to someone for 20 minutes (making sure they read the exact words on the page!)
    • Edutyping (ClassLink)

This week, we introduced our 4th graders to Unit 8: Earth Changes. They will practice reading and analyzing firsthand accounts and informational texts about Earth's changes.

In writing, students will conduct research to write a firsthand fictional account.

In math, we are reviewing key concepts to reinforce learning.

Fourth Grade Assessments are this week:

    • Monday: ELA Summative (8:15 - 10:15)
    • Tuesday: Math Summative (8:15 - 9:45)
    • Wednesday: Math Summative (8:15 - 9:45)
    • Thursday: ELA Summative (8:15 - 10:15)
    • Friday: Math Summative (8:15 - 9:45)

    Charge Chromebook daily!

Additionally, all 4th-grade classes will visit the library this week to explore new books and strengthen their love for reading!

For ELA, we are working through Unit 7. This week, there will be a spelling test on Unit 7 Week 3 words.

In Math, we are finishing Unit 11, with a test on Monday. We will then move into Unit 12, which will focus on measurement and data.

For health, we are finishing up the nutrition unit.

For Science, we are delving into the Earth and Sun unit, focusing on planetary systems. Each class will visit our Star Lab over the next couple of weeks.

For Social Studies, we are working through lesson 8 and lesson 9 with a focus on Latin America.

Please see the “NES News” tab on the 5th Grade Website for more information about what’s happening in 5th grade.

Ms. Wall is teaching the current unit on negative numbers in 6th-grade math. The Military Child is the topic for an ELA essay. In social studies, we are finishing up the Byzantine Empire and genes, traits, mutations, & adaptation in science.
