Grade-Level Highlights: A Peak into Our Week

PreK students will discuss how many things help people grow, like food, water, and exercise. Plants need some of the same things to grow and some different things. Plants need soil, water, air, and sunlight to grow; some plants need lots of sun, and some plants only need a little sun.

Kindergarten will be travelling to Lo Zoo di Napoli on Wednesday, May 7. Parents must return permission slips to their child’s teacher NLT Friday, May 2.

In language arts, we are focusing on informative writing and complete sentences. Our letter focus is Kk, and the sight words are that, then, them, and this.

In math, we will continue to learn about measurement, focusing on weight and capacity. Our vocabulary includes the following words: heavier, lighter, weight, capacity, full, and empty.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, please make sure that all sweaters, jackets, cardigans, etc., have your child’s name on them. Thank you for remembering to send a full water bottle with your child daily.

On Thursday, April 24th, we have our 1st grade field trip to the Pottery Studio. If you have not done so already, please turn in your 16 EURO exact change to your child’s teacher, along with their completed permission form. On the field trip day, please ensure your child comes with a home lunch (peanut and tree nut free), a filled water bottle, and their backpack.

In ELA, we will continue working on the writing process for an informational text. We will also continue using timelines and learning about gathering information from both text and pictures. In math, we will continue working in Unit 11, and in Science, we will continue working on the Air and Weather unit, specifically on experiments that teach us how to observe the sky.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with your child’s teacher. Have a wonderful weekend! 😊

2nd grade will be continuing in Unit 7: Investigating the past. We will be reading three non-fictional texts called "Newton and Gravity," "An Exciting Day in San Francisco," and "A Dinosaur Named SUE."  We will apply various reading comprehension skills such as determining the main idea, identifying key details, cause & effect text connections, shades of meaning, comparing and contrasting different texts, and reflecting. In grammar, we will focus on past tense verbs and how they tell about something that has already happened.  Some past tense verbs do not end in –ed. They are called irregular verbs. We will also be reviewing formal language; we speak in a proper way.  When we use informal language, we talk casually.

This week in 3rd Grade, we started our Unit 12 measures unit, which involves estimating and solving problems related to liquid volume, mass, time, and graphs. This week, we focused on volume and mass. Telling the time to the nearest minute is what we are aiming for in this unit, so anything you can do to support telling time (analog and digital) at home will help tremendously! In ELA, we continued working on Unit 6, Week 2, reading a story called "The Wolf and the Fox." In writing, students have been practicing writing narrative journal entries from the perspective of their chosen character from the story, learning to use dialogue to dramatize events or suggest things about the character. In Science, students continued to investigate forces and motion patterns; in Social Studies, we continued to work on our economics unit.

    • Field trip letters went out this week. Please return signed letters with the correct euro amount by Monday, April 28th.
    • 3rd Grade end of year summative assessments start April 28th – May 5th (Field Trip Thursday, May 1st)

This week, our 4th graders continue working on Unit 8: Earth Changes. They will practice reading and analyzing firsthand accounts and informational texts about Earth's changes.

In writing, students will conduct research on informative reports.

In math, we introduce Unit 11: Represent Multiplication of a Unit Fraction by a Whole Number.

Students did a fantastic job on their assessments last week.

This week, our students will be taking our summative assessments.   To help them perform their best, please ensure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a healthy breakfast daily.

Our testing schedule will be as follows:

    • Monday: ELA Summative (9:50 - 11:50)
    • Tuesday: Math Summative (9:50 - 11:20)
    • Wednesday: Math Summative (9:50 - 11:20)
    • Thursday: Math Summative (9:50 - 11:20)
    • Friday: ELA Summative (9:50 - 11:50)

Please save the date of Thursday, May 1st, as we will hold our Ukulele concert at 8:20 am in the cafeteria.  Also, save the date of Friday, April 25th, as we will hold our awards ceremony for honor roll awardees.  You should have heard from your child's teacher if your child receives an award.

Please see the "NES News" tab on the 5th grade website for more information about what's happening in 5th grade.

The 6th-grade scientists are examining how traits that increase the chance of survival and reproduction can become more prevalent in a population.  In math, we are moving onto the 4 quadrants of coordinate planes. The Month of the Military Child project in ELA and West African kingdoms in social studies rounds out the week.
