    National Speech Language Hearing Month

📱 Too Much Screen Time? Let’s Talk About It!

May is National Speech Language Hearing Month, a time to celebrate communication and raise awareness about supporting our children’s speech, language, and hearing development. At Naples Elementary School, our speech and hearing specialists are here to help every child find their voice, and we want to share an important message with our families.

In today’s digital world, screens are everywhere. While technology can be a great learning tool, too much screen time, especially for young children, can have negative effects on their social, emotional, and overall communication development.

🚫 What Happens When Screen Time Replaces Face Time?

    • Reduced conversation: Children learn language by interacting with others. When screens replace face-to-face communication, kids miss out on valuable opportunities to practice speaking, listening, and understanding.
    • Delayed social skills: Real-life play helps children learn how to take turns, read facial expressions, and solve problems with peers—skills that can’t be learned from a tablet.
    • Emotional disconnect: Excessive screen use can limit a child’s ability to recognize and express emotions, which are key to building healthy relationships.

    ✅ What Can Parents Do?

    • Set screen time limits and encourage screen-free family time.
    • Talk, read, and play with your child daily—these are the best ways to build strong language and social skills.
    • Model healthy tech habits by putting your own devices down during family time.

Let’s work together to create a balanced environment where our children can grow into confident communicators. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s speech or language development, our team is here to support you!
