Administration

Dear Parents,

We are thrilled to celebrate Music in Our Schools Month, a time dedicated to recognizing music education's vital role in our students' lives. This month, we have a variety of exciting musical events and activities planned that we are eager to share with you.

This week, Mr. Ondak's 6th-grade band serenaded students in the atrium with a lively "Power Rock" performance before school. Their energy and enthusiasm were a fantastic way to start the day!

Additionally, we have been enjoying "Music in the Morning" with Mr. Ondak and Ms. Wootton. Each morning, they share the staff's musical favorites with the students over the loudspeaker, bringing a wonderful sense of calm and joy to our school community.

Next week, we are looking forward to the PTA Music in Our Schools Spirit Week. This special week will feature fun and engaging activities to celebrate our love for music. We encourage all students to participate and show their musical spirit!

We are also excited about the upcoming 4th-grade recorder concert next week, which Mr. Ondak and Ms. Wootton will lead for students and parents. Our 4th graders have been working hard, and we can't wait to see them showcase their talents.

Finally, Ms. Wootton's 6th-grade choir will sing for students entering the building on Wednesday, March 26.

We hope you will join us in celebrating Music in Our Schools Month and support our students as they explore and enjoy the world of music.

We thank Mr. Ondak, Ms. Wootton, the PTA, and all our staff and parent volunteers for making this a special celebration for all our students.

Warm regards,

Mr. Rivera & Ms. Rascoe

Grade-Level Highlights: A Peak into Our Week

PreK students will discuss the different characteristics of pets. We will compare and reinforce the differences between domesticated and wild animals.  We will remind friends that wild animals are not pets because they can be dangerous and unpredictable, and they usually do not like to live with people. We will also have a visit from a working dog and learn the difference between working pets and house pets.

Kinders are starting unit 7 in Language Arts, which focuses on holidays and celebrations. The letter focus this week is Ww. This is a tricky letter name and sound for many students. Sight words this week: are, come, saw.

In math, we are exploring three dimensional/solid shapes. Your child should be able to name and describe a cube, sphere, cylinder, and cone. We will also review position words.

In science, we will participate in lots of activities to help us learn about motion.

Next week in ELA, we will finish Unit 6 Week 2 and Begin Unit 6 Week 3.

    Phonics: long e final -e, long u final -e

Shared Reading: The Day Turtle Grew Feathers

Reading Strategies: Listen and retell key details, describe the central message of the story, compare and contrast two stories

Grammar Skill(s): Using conjunctions in compound sentences

Writing: Writing process- brainstorming and writing a personal narrative

In math, we will finish Unit 9 and take our Unit 9 assessment. In science, we will continue our Air and weather scientific investigations.

If you have specific questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher. Have a wonderful weekend! 😊

Awesome job, 2nd grade, on your pop bottle inventors! They are amazing and truly showcase how different individuals identified problems and invented solutions to improve our lives today. Our students excelled in reading and gathering key ideas and details from various resources, presenting them creatively and informally (SL.2.2). They also did an incredible job selecting different materials to bring their pop bottles to life (2-PS1-2). We will display the inventions in the school atrium for the week. Great work, everyone! 🎉

This week in 3rd Grade, we have been consolidating our understanding of multiplication patterns and 2-step word problems in Unit 10 mathematics. Students who continue to practice and learn their rapid recall of multiplication facts daily at home can problem-solve more fluently and confidently, so please continue to support your child with learning their facts at home. It makes all the difference in class! In ELA, we have been reading all about the phonograph, gramophone, and other technological advancements, focusing on writing complex sentences and making connections across different texts. In science, we continue to learn about forces, and in social studies, we have started to learn about our new economics unit! Students have been discussing the concept of a Farmer’s Market in preparation for their market day in May! (more info to come)

    Friendly reminders:

    • Charge Chromebook daily!
    • Daily multiplication fact practice!

For ELA, we are starting Unit 7. Students will study Unit 7 Week 1 words for this week's spelling test.

In Math, we are finishing up Unit 10, focusing on the multiplication of fractions. This week's grade will be based on the Unit 10 assessment. We will also be taking our next Benchmark assessment on Thursday, March 20th, which will cover everything we have learned up to this point.

For Health, we are starting a new unit focused on nutrition and making good food choices.

For Science, we are delving into the earth and sun unit, focusing on shadows and understanding the earth's rotations using compasses. In Social Studies, we are starting a new unit focusing on Latin America. The Social Studies vocabulary test will be on Friday, March 21st (flash cards were distributed last week for studying purposes).

Please see the 5th grade website's "NES News" tab for more information about what's happening in 5th grade.

Some 6th-grade students had the fantastic opportunity to meet with a scientist who worked with the NASA Europa Clipper mission. Students asked him questions about the mission and learned more about the job of a scientist.
